How to Identify It
Pushmatic panels (made by Bulldog, later ITE) are instantly recognizable: instead of switch handles, the breakers are flat push buttons you press to turn on and off. They went into homes from the 1950s through the early 70s — central Phoenix, older Mesa, Sunnyslope, and the Valley’s midcentury neighborhoods are full of them.

Why It Needs to Go
Pushmatic’s issue is age and design, not scandal. The breakers use a grease-packed mechanism that hardens over decades — buttons get stiff, trip response gets sluggish, and a breaker that needs to act in milliseconds can hesitate. The originals are also thermal-only breakers, with no magnetic trip element for fast response to dead-short faults, and many Pushmatic panels have no main breaker at all: there’s no single switch that kills the whole house in an emergency.
Add the practical problems — replacement breakers are scarce, expensive, and decades old themselves; the panels are usually 60–100 amps, half of what a modern Phoenix home needs — and replacement stops being a safety-only argument. You’re maintaining a museum piece that also happens to guard your family against electrical fire.

Common Questions
Was Pushmatic recalled like the others?
No — Pushmatic was solid equipment for its era. The problem is that its era ended 50+ years ago. Grease-hardened mechanisms, thermal-only trips, no main disconnect, and scarce parts make it obsolete equipment doing a safety-critical job.
How do I test if my Pushmatic breakers still work?
You can’t meaningfully test trip response at home — pressing the button proves it switches, not that it trips under fault. If the buttons feel stiff or your panel predates 1972, book the free estimate and we’ll assess it properly.
Is “no main breaker” actually a big deal?
In an emergency, yes. With a split-bus or no-main design, shutting everything down means finding and flipping the right combination of breakers while your outlet smokes. A modern panel gives you one main and a labeled directory.
Can my 60-amp Pushmatic handle central AC and an EV?
No — and that’s often what forces the decision. A 200-amp replacement solves capacity and safety in the same day’s work.
