How to Identify It
Challenger panels went into a huge number of 1980s and early-90s homes — which in the Valley means Ahwatukee, north Glendale, early Gilbert and Chandler, and big swaths of Scottsdale. Look for “Challenger” on the panel label or breakers; some later units say “Eaton” or “Cutler-Hammer” after the buyout, with Challenger-marked breakers still inside.

Why It Needs to Go
Challenger is the one on this list with actual recalls on the books: certain Challenger breaker models were recalled through the CPSC after they were found to overheat at the connection point, and Eaton later recalled Challenger-branded GFCI breakers that could fail to trip. The documented pattern in the field is overheating where the breaker meets the bus — melted bus stabs, discolored breaker bases, and that unmistakable hot-plastic smell.
Not every Challenger panel has failed — but the recalled breakers are inside many of them, the design runs hot at the bus, and 35–40 Arizona summers accelerate everything. When a home inspector finds one during a sale, the repair request is nearly automatic. Replacing it on your schedule beats replacing it during escrow on a buyer’s.
