Aluminum branch wiring (common 1965–1975) expands and contracts at connections until they loosen, overheat, and arc. Cloth-insulated wire gets brittle. Pro Tips & Straight Answers

  • The aluminum years: 1965–1975. Copper prices spiked, builders switched. Check your panel: branch wires stamped AL or ALUMINUM. Homes in that window should be checked even if nothing seems wrong.
  • “Backstabbed” outlets are everywhere. From the 70s through the 90s, installers pushed wires into spring clips instead of screwing them down. They loosen with heat cycles — re-terminating a room runs $150–$250 and prevents the classic warm-outlet complaint.
  • Two-prong outlets have a legal shortcut. Code (NEC 406.4(D)) allows GFCI protection to legalize three-prong outlets on ungrounded circuits — labeled “No Equipment Ground.” Not as good as rewiring, but a legitimate budget bridge.
  • Buried junction boxes fail inspections. Every splice must stay accessible — no boxes sealed inside walls or ceilings. It’s the most common violation we find in flipped houses.
  • AFCI breakers are cheap insurance. They detect the arcing that precedes electrical fires and have been code-required in bedrooms since the early 2000s. Retrofitting them into an older panel is a small-dollar, big-safety move.
  • Summer attic work happens at dawn. Valley attics hit 150°F by noon; we schedule attic-heavy rewiring for first thing in the morning. It’s a safety practice — and it’s why summer rewires book out further.
  • Rewiring during a remodel saves thousands. If walls are opening anyway for a kitchen or bath, that’s the moment — no fishing, no patching, and smart-home wiring costs almost nothing to add while everything’s exposed.
  • Flickering across the whole house — not one room — can be a failing utility neutral at the service. That’s urgent: call us and your utility, because it can cook electronics on every circuit at once.

Do you have to open all my walls to rewire?

No. We fish most runs through the attic and wall cavities, opening small access points only where structure demands it. You get a map of every planned opening before work starts, and we can include patched drywall in the quote.

Is aluminum wiring really dangerous?

Aluminum branch wiring has a well-documented failure mode at connections — homes with it are far more likely to develop fire-hazard conditions at outlets and switches. Full replacement is ideal; AlumiConn remediation at every connection is the accepted, insurer-recognized alternative at a fraction of the cost.

Can we live in the house during a rewire?

Almost always, yes. We work room by room, restore power every evening, and keep the site clean. A typical whole-home rewire runs 2–5 working days.

How do I know if my home needs rewiring?
