Pro Tips & Straight Answers
- The 80% rule: code (NEC 625) limits continuous charging to 80% of circuit rating — a 50-amp circuit delivers 40 amps to the car. That’s why “48-amp charging” requires a 60-amp circuit, and why oversizing has real panel implications.
- Off-peak charging is stupidly cheap. On APS and SRP EV/time-of-use plans, overnight charging can cost the gasoline equivalent of well under $1/gallon. Set the schedule once in the car and forget it.
- Full panel? There’s a $500 workaround. Load-management devices (DCC, NeoCharge, SimpleSwitch) pause charging when big loads run, letting many “full” panels legally take a charger without a $4,000 upgrade.
- Hardwire beats plug-in in Arizona garages. NEMA 14-50 receptacles derate in heat and cheap ones scorch under continuous load. If you go plug-in, insist on an industrial-grade receptacle (Hubbell/Bryant), never the $12 builder special.
- Buy UL-listed or don’t buy it. Bargain chargers without UL/ETL listing can void insurance claims after an electrical fire. Every brand we install carries a real listing.
- Two EVs, one circuit: most quality chargers now power-share — two units splitting one 60-amp circuit — which beats paying for a second circuit or panel work.
- Run bigger conduit than you need today. The wire is cheap while the wall is open; pulling heavier wire through existing conduit later costs a fraction of a new run.
- Check for a factory EV stub. Many Valley homes built after ~2018 have a 240V “EV-ready” junction box in the garage — if yours does, your install lands at the very bottom of the price range.

Can my electrical panel handle an EV charger?
Often yes — a 40–50 amp circuit fits comfortably in most 200-amp panels. Older 100–125 amp panels are usually the limiting factor. We run a load calculation on every job and give you a straight answer, with flat pricing for a panel upgrade if you need one.
Hardwired or plug-in (NEMA 14-50) — which is better?
Hardwired installs support higher charging speeds, look cleaner, and are required by some manufacturers for their full warranty. A 14-50 outlet offers portability. We recommend based on your car and driving, not what is easiest for us.
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in Arizona?
Yes — a new 240V circuit requires a permit and inspection in every Valley jurisdiction. We include both in the price. Unpermitted installs can void manufacturer warranties and cause problems at resale.
How fast will a Level 2 charger charge my car?
Depending on your vehicle and the circuit size, 25–40 miles of range per hour — roughly a full charge overnight for any EV on the market.
